The US Drug Enforcement Administration previously announced this year their consideration of rescheduling Cannabis from a Schedule 1 controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act to a lesser controlled substance, which would allow Marijuana acceptable for medical purposes. Today, the DEA shut down the petition for Cannabis to be rescheduled, and therefore Marijuana will remain a schedule 1 controlled substance for now.
However, good news came from their response: they will be increasing the number of manufacturers legally authorized to grow Marijuana for research purposes. This will hopefully allow researchers more availability to perform much needed research into the medical benefits of Marijuana.
